Dreams by Langston Hughes
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
Summary:
In this poem, the narrator suggests the audience to hold onto dreams tightly because if there is no dream in human life then life will be like a bird with damaged wings that cannot fly. According to the poet, if dreams die, life will be like a bird with damaged wings that cannot fly. So, when dreams go away, life is “barren field” covered with frozen snow. Actually, dreams have no physical existence and so surely dreams are very important for maintaining faith as they provide comfort, solace, and hope in a brutal world.
