1. Read the text and answer the following questions A and B.

One of the sources of water in our country are the rivers. Rivers are everywhere in our life, literature, economy and culture. But are the rivers in good shape? Unfortunately, they are not. A few are already dead and several are going through the pangs of death. The river Buriganga is an example of a dying river. A report published in the Daily Sun describes what has happened to the river Buriganga and why. It’s water is polluted and a perpetual stench fills the air around it. But that is not what it was like before. The report says that the river had a glorious past.

Once it was a tributary of the mighty Ganges and flowed into the Bay of Bengal through the river Dhaleshwari. Gradually, it lost its link with the Ganges and got the name Buriganga. The Mughals marveled at the tide level of the Buriganga and founded their capital Jahangirnagar on its banks in 1610. The river supplied drinking water and supported trade and commerce. Jahangirnagar was renamed Dhaka which grew into a heavily populated city with a chronic shortage of space. The city paid back the bounty of the river by sucking life out of it! According to newspaper report, the Buriganga is dying because of pollution. Huge quantities of toxic chemicals and wastes from mills and factories, hospitals and clinics and households and other establishments are dumped into the river every day. The city of Dhaka discharges about 4500 tons of solid waste every day and most of it is directly released into the Buriganga.

2. Read the following text and make a flow chart showing the specialty of Gazi Pir. (No. 1 has been done for you)                                      2×5=10

According to some myths and legends, Gazi Pir was a Muslim saint who is said to have spread Islam in the parts of Bengal close to the Sunderbans. He was credited with many miracles. For example, he could supposedly calm dangerous animals and make them docile. He is usually depicted in paats or scroll paintings riding a fierce-looking Bengal tiger, a snake in his hand, but in no apparent danger. According to some stories, he also fought crocodiles who threatened the people of a region full of canals and creeks, indeed, a kind of watery jungle bordering the Bay of Bengal. Because of his alert and vigilant presence, all predatory animals were said to have been kept within bounds. It was also believed that he enabled villagers to live close to forests and jungles and cultivate their lands. Consequently, people of these regions would pray to him for protection. The story of Gazi Pir has been preserved in folk literature as well as art and has been performed in indigenous theatre. In fact, some Gazir paat scrolls are part of the collection of the British Museum.

 3. Write a summary of the following text.                                                          10

The streets are now my home. Sometimes I find work. I used to collect trash and sell it to a vendor. I stopped doing that after I had a serious infection and a doctor told me to stay away from the trash dump. Once I worked for an ice cream stop owner and sold ice cream on the beach. But I got no money in return. The owner of the shop gave me something to eat, and let me sleep in his but at night. The work was difficult and painful. The ice cream box is quite heavy when it is full. I had to walk for hours, offering my ice cream to whoever wanted to buy. There were days when I could not even sell one ice cream. In a way, I am lucky because I am alive. My friends who work sorting rubbish in dump often suffer from serious diseases. One of them was recently killed after he fell into a hole that opened up in the pile of trash. Many of us work for 10 to 12 hours, and get so little in return that we can’t even buy food.

The Role of Chorus in Electra and Hippolytus

The role of Chorus in Electra and Hippolytus

Both Sophocles’ Electra and Euripides’ Hippolytus are two Greek classic plays in which

Chorus plays a vital role. Generally in play, Chorus is presented as a group of people who observe the incidents of the play and convey the messages to the readers. In Electra, Sophocles presents Chorus as a group of women of Mycenae and in Hippolytus, Euripides presents Chorus as a group of Trozen women. The role and function of Chorus in both plays are described below.

Electra is a Greek tragedy by Sophocles set in the city of Argos a few years after the

Trojan War, it is based around the character of Electra, and the vengeance that she and her brother Orestes take on their mother Clytemnestra and step father Aegisthus for the murder of their father,Agamemnon.Electra, daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, rescued her young brother Orestes from her mother by sending him to Strophius of Phocis. The play begins years later when Orestes has returned as a grown man with a plot for revenge, as well as to claim the throne.

The Chorus plays a large part in establishing the tone of the play. In many ways, this

group of women guides the readers as to how to react to the action on stage. In this case, we see that the Chorus agrees that she has been treated terribly since her father died, and they lament her situation. Even they also try to console Electra when she feels alone in her own place. They say-

“You are not alone, dear child, in the sorrow which moves you more than the others who share your home.”

They share her grief when she thinks that Orestes is dead and her joy when he shows up alive. When Electra laments for her brother Orestes, the Chorus says-

“Is there no Sun to light, no thunder in heaven, none to smite such infamy?”

Again when Electra and Orestes go into the palace, the Chorus gives audiences an indication that something is going to be happened. They say-

“Now the defender of the dead creeps into his father’s house…leads him on the end;

the waiting is over.”

And just after a while, through the Chrous’ words the readers come to know that Clytemnestra,

the murderer of Electra and Orestes’ father, Agamemnon, is no more, as they say-

“The curse has its way; the dead speak from the earth; the tide is turned and the bloodies sucked from the slayer by the slain of long ago.”

But the Chorus also gives Electra a hard time, especially at the beginning of the play

whenshe debates with Chrysothemis about how to live their lives in light of their father’s

murder. The Chorus actually takes Chrysothem is’ side- they encourage Electra to move on like her sister, to start thinking pragmatically instead of idealistically. This tension is important – the Chorus does not just echo Electra’s ideas here. Thus the Chorus plays a very important role in the play Electra.

Again in Hippolytus, the Chorus is found playing a vital role. Hippolytus is a tragedy by

the ancient Greek playwright Euripides. It is based on the myth of Hippolytus, son of Theseus, and how a series of misunderstandings and the meddling of the God’s result in his death and that of his stepmother, Phaedra. In this play, the Chorus consists of women living in Trozen. Present for most of the play’s action, the Chorus becomes an unwitting confidante of Phaedra, and privy to this additional information, the Chorus attempts to discourage Theseus from enacting his wrath against Hippolytus.

However, the women must abide by an oath of silence that prevents them from fully

explaining Phaedra’s lust and suicide. The Chorus does promise to Phaedra and say-

“I swear by Zeus’s daughter, holy Artemis, to disclose nothing of what you

                      have suffered here.”

Even the news of Phaedra’s death is also known to the readers by the Chorus’ words when they say-

“It is done, then, and all over now. The queen is dead.”

Even knowing the truth, the Chorus cannot reveal it to Theseus when he accuses and punishes Hippolytus for Phaedra’s death without giving the king some indications. For example, the Chorus says-

“The wheel has turned; disaster follows on disaster. Fate is irresistible, and there is no escape.”

Thus with such kind of witty words the Chorus conveys important information and reveals

significant moment to the readers. In the end also the Chorus’ words shows a great sympathy to the tragic hero Hippolytus as they say-

“When great men die their remembered story stirs the greater grief.”

The Chorus fulfills its traditional role of providing context, continuity, and commentary

on the action of the play. The women frequently comment on the thematic elements of the play, lamenting the horrific power that love wields.

Thus in both plays the Chorus plays a vital role. They decorate the plays with the

witty words which help the readers to understand many hidden truths easily. And both Sophocles and Euripides portray the image of the Chorus as a significant role in the plays.

Writing Style of Francis Bacon

The Writing Style of Francis Bacon

In the history of the great Elizabethan age, the name of Francis Bacon stands out remarkably. He was famous as a great politician, but he was, perhaps, more famous as a man of letters and science. He is the most quotable writer in the world. Today he is known chiefly as a man of letters, as a great intellectualist, and he is given a high position in the history of English literature, particularly of English prose. Actually, Bacon’s importance is evident in the zone of English essays.

He is characterized as the “father of English essays” which is undoubtedly true. His essays are remarkable for their brevity. His way of writing essays shares a number of qualities with that of Elizabethan and Jacobean writers. His essays show how a diverting study can be formed from some loose sally of thoughts. His wonderful literary flights, his precise and pointed observations and his originality of presentation have given his essays a uniqueness. This unparalleled quality has proved inspiring even for the modern world. Although Bacon’s essays are not strictly personal, they bear a note of familiarity and a good deal of personal reflections. These essays show that his importance is indisputable.

Bacon’s greatest contribution is his influence on the formation of a powerful prose style in English literature. He deserves the honor of the pioneer for his prose style. The simplicity and the force, which are evident in the modern English prose style, are certainly due to him. Bacon’s style of prose writing proves that English can also be used to express fine thoughts in simple sentences. His sentences are short and rapid but very powerful and influential. Though Bacon is popularly known for his prose style, he has contributed to the materialistic and socio-economic thoughts of his age through his writings. The materialistic writings of subsequent ages are found much indebted to him in this respect. He was actually influenced by the socio-economic condition and materialistic attitude of the English society. These things have been portrayed through his pen.

Bacon’s writing has been admired for various reasons. Some admire his dazzling power of rhetoric, others his grace, and yet others find him too stiff and rigid. But all admit that he is one of the greatest writers of English prose of his age.

The value and significance of a work of literature derives from its two basic aspects- subjects and style. Bacon in his “Essays”, took all knowledge as his province. The range of his subjects is vast. But all of them have relevance to man and the world in which he lives. The style matches the aim of the writer. The vast knowledge finds expression in Bacon’s style as well in the innumerable allusions and quotations. Bacon uses figurative language to convince the readers.

Bacon’s essays encompass a wide range of subjects. In most of the essays, he deals with man in relation to the world and society. All his essays for kings and statesmen come under this heading, as well as the essays such as “Of Friendship”, “Of Revenge”, “Of Marriage and Single Life”, “Of Parents and Children” and so on. A glance through the essays is enough to say that Bacon’s essays are full of human interest and deal with what man is and what he does.

The style of Bacon remains for the main part aphoristic, with the result that he is one of the most quotable of writers. There is an epigrammatic brevity in the essays of Bacon. His sentences are brief and rapid, but they are also forceful. His sentences have the power of compressing an idea into a few words which other writers may express in several sentences. The essays of Bacon in fact have to be read slowly because of the compact and condensed thought. There are a number of sentences which are read like proverbs. Examples easily jump to one’s mind:

A lie faces God and shrinks from man. (Of Truth)

The ways to enrich are many, and most of them foul. (Of Riches)

Bacon has the habit of weighing the pros and cons of every question that he deals with. When he makes a statement, he almost immediately counter-balances it. He scrupulously presents the advantages and the disadvantages of a particular issue; he gives both sides of the picture. Sometimes he draws definite conclusions after balancing the issues, but most of the time the reader is left to draw his own conclusion.

Though Bacon’s style is heavy with learning, yet it is more flexible than any of his predecessors and contemporaries. The sentences are short with this softness and lucidity. The grammatical structure is sometimes loose, but the sense is rarely ambiguous. There is no humor in Bacon’s essays, but there is ample of wit. He is a master of the skillful use of words. Practical wisdom insight packs each sentence. A load of meaning is compressed into the short space of a sentence. These short, crisp, pithy sayings have become famous as quotations:

“For there is no such flatterer as is a man’s self”     (Of Friendship)

“He that hath wife and children hath given hostages to fortune”     (Of Marriage and Single Life)

“Revenge is a kind of wild justice”     (Of Revenge)

All these striking thoughts are communicated in an authoritative manner.

Bacon’s Essays is a handbook of practical wisdom, and reflects the author’s wide experience of human nature, conduct and state affairs. He writes for a serious purpose; hence his tone is appropriately serious and dignified. The allusions, the quotations, the images are woven into the idea to be expressed. His essays are the proof of his strength of mind and intellect. They are deeper and more discriminating than any earlier work in the English language. Full of profound observations, carefully sorted and selected, and mature, they exhibit a remarkable sagacity and insight.

Bacon’s position among the greatest writers of the English essay cannot be minimized. He showed for the first time that English was as capable as Greek or Latin of serving the highest purpose of language. He showed that it was possible in English also to express the inner thoughts in clear, straight-forward, and uninvolved sentences. The style evolved by Bacon was also flexible enough to fit a variety of topics. He brought to the English language brevity and crispness of expression. Indeed, judged from the point of view of scholarly genius, Bacon is one of the greatest of English essayists.

Thomas Alva Edison was born February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio (pronounced MY-lan). In 1854, when he was seven, the family moved to Michigan, where Edison spent the rest of his childhood.
“Al,” as he was called as a boy, went to school only a short time. He did so poorly that his mother, a former teacher, taught her son at home. Al learned to love reading, a habit he kept for the rest of his life. He also liked to make experiments in the basement.
Al not only played hard, but also worked hard. At the age of 12 he sold fruit, snacks and newspapers on a train as a “news butcher.” (Trains were the newest way to travel, cutting through the American wilderness.) He even printed his own newspaper, the Grand Trunk Herald, on a moving train.
At 15, Al roamed the country as a “tramp telegrapher.” Using a kind of alphabet called Morse Code, he sent and received messages over the telegraph. Even though he was already losing his hearing, he could still hear the clicks of the telegraph. In the next seven years he moved over a dozen times, often working all night, taking messages for trains and even for the Union Army during the Civil War. In his spare time, he took things apart to see how they worked. Finally, he decided to invent things himself.
After the failure of his first invention, the electric vote recorder, Edison moved to New York City. There he improved the way the stock ticker worked. This was his big break. By 1870 his company was manufacturing his stock ticker in Newark, New Jersey. He also improved the telegraph, making it send up to four messages at once.
During this time he married his first wife, Mary Stilwell, on Christmas Day, 1871. They had three children — Marion, Thomas, Jr., and William. Wanting a quieter spot to do more inventing, Edison moved from Newark to Menlo Park, New Jersey, in 1876. There he built his most famous laboratory

How to Speak English Fluently

$

1. How can this be possible to master the English language effectively at the fastest time? (In other words, is it possible to speak English almost like the English within four months?)
It’s a regrettable fact that according to the national curriculum the students of our country study English compulsorily for 12 years in their schools and colleges. Twelve years! It’s unbelievable! More than a decade!

The more regret is that even after acquiring honors and master’s degree from the universities, most of them do not understand English well and they cannot speak English fluently and also they can’t write correctly.
So to most people,
“How can this be possible to master the English language effectively at the fastest time?” Or,
“How is it possible to speak English fluently? And How to understand English books, newspapers and magazines, etc. easily?” Moreover,
“How is it possible to understand the broadcastings from English-speaking channels?”
– these are the most concerning issues.
So we should adopt such a method so that we can achieve maximum success by spending the minimum time, labor and money.
However, hopefully, the answer is,
Possible. Yes, possible! It is possible to speak English almost like the English within 4 months! English kids take several years but it is possible for you only within 4 months!! As you are not still a new-born baby.
Through this method, not only adults, even a school-going student of class six or seven can achieve such of those skills in English by making some extra efforts within only four months. This will not disrupt one’s educational studies. Just making some extra efforts according to the specific method will do everything. Consequently, after this four-month effort, one would not have to be worried about the English language throughout his life anymore. Neither a tutor will be required nor should they go to a coaching center later on.
Yes, by all means. Rest assured. Relying on Allah (swt), I guarantee you that, this is very possible.
To achieve this just you need to be self-confidence or determined and a little bit of hard working.

But what is most important is that – an effective, comprehensive and pragmatic direction.
I have used two specific words in this sense, that is, the method must be- 1. Comprehensive and 2. Pragmatic.

That is, to learn English, everything should be specific of what you will do and what will not do and how you will do everything of those from the beginning to the end. And those plans and activities have to be pragmatic.
And the name of such an effective, comprehensive and pragmatic method of learning English is – Comprehensive Method of Spoken English. And this method is absolutely pragmatic.
By the endless blessings of Allah (swt), I found this method as effective through long research, thought and experiment. Which I will gradually introduce to you in the next videos, Insha Allah.
In pursuance of this method, all of your complexity in English will remove and English will become a simple and easy thing for you, Insha Allah.

In that case, you could understand English books as well as the English; you could be able to speak English fluently with them and also you could understand CNN, BBC, and like other English-speaking channels.

Then what is left?

Operant Conditioning

The work of Skinner was rooted in a view that classical conditioning was far too simplistic to be a complete explanation of complex human behavior.

He believed that the best way to understand behavior is to look at the causes of an action and its consequences. He called this approach operant conditioning.

Behavior—-Reinforce——strengthened or repeated behavior

Positive reinforce

For example, if your teacher gives you £5 each time you complete your homework (i.e. a reward) you will be more likely to repeat this behavior in the future, thus strengthening the behavior of completing your homework.

Negative reinforce

For example, if you do not complete your homework, you give your teacher £5. You will complete your homework to avoid paying £5, thus strengthening the behavior of completing your homework.

Behavior ——punisher——-weakened or decreased behavior

Impact of re-inforcer does not sustain
