Write a letter to your friend describing how you spent summer vacation.

01 September 2018

Gulshan, Dhaka.

Dear Tisha,

I received your letter a few days back. I am glad to know that you are all well. In your letter you have asked me to tell you how I spent the last summer vacation. Now I am giving you a short description of it.

I spent the vacation doing quite a number of things. I took a short training on computer. Then I went to my village home. I visited the houses of friends, relatives and neighbors. They were very glad to see me and entertained me with seasonal fruits and cakes. I was happy to receive their entertainment. In the afternoon, I walked in the open field and by the side of the river. I arranged a literacy program for the illiterate elderly people of my village. They came to our house almost every day in the evening and I taught them how to read and write.

That is all for today. Convey my regards to your parents and love to all.

With best wishes,

Your loving friend,

Sakib

Write a letter to your friend showing condolence at his mother’s death

21 August 2018

Dhaka

DearTunu,
I am very shocked to hear that your mother is no more on earth. I could never think that she would leave us at such a premature age; I do not know how to condole you in such a situation. I have no word to console you. The loss of a mother is irrecoverable. I know how sad it is to lose a mother because I have also lost mine. But this is the reality of nature that every living being has to admit this reality.

I pray to the Almighty to give you strength to bear the loss. I also pray heartily that her soul may rest in peace.

Sincerely yours,

Anika.

Teaching as a Profession

Teaching as a Profession

Actually teaching is more than a profession because it’s always a challenging and is the specialized application of knowledge, skills and attributes designed to provide unique service to meet the educational needs of the individual and of society. The choice of learning activities whereby the goals of education are realized in the school is the responsibility of the teaching profession. In this profession as a professional, I have to maintain many duties and responsibilities. I am always sincere about dress code, manner, behavior and subject knowledge. Similarly, I have to be updated in all the times because students like to get update information. I always enjoy teaching very much because it is the only profession where a person can directly involve himself with education and he can gather newly information and thus he can keep him updated. It is also a very tough profession because a teacher has to manage all the students and fulfill their knowledge of thirst and interests. In the same way, the teacher has to be so much patience. It is also a boring work to check the exam scripts. But it is a matter of great regret that in our society a teacher is always ill-paid. That’s why meritorious students never want to take teaching as a profession.

Nature of Learning

       Nature of Learning

Generally, Learning is the process by which an individual acquires knowledge, attitudes and skills that are necessary to meet the demands of life. While touching a burning candle, a child gets burnt and he withdraws the fingers. When he faces a similar situation again he withdraws his fingers faster. Gradually he learns to avoid not only the burning candle but also other burning things. The behavior of an individual is thus changed through experiences. This change in behavior brought about by experiences is commonly known as learning. Thus, Learning means change in behavior or behavior potential that occurs as a result of experience. Normally, a child normally learns from his parents, teachers and the environment.

It’s very natural that a student learns in many ways— by seeing and hearing; reflecting and acting; reasoning logically and intuitively; memorizing and visualizing and drawing analogies and building mathematical models; steadily and in fits and starts. Teaching methods also vary. Some instructors lecture, others demonstrate or discuss; some focus on principles and others on applications; some emphasize memory and others understanding. He can learn many things from his or her daily activities, society, culture, family, religion, teacher, friends, books, practical experience, environment etc. In my class room I apply many theories and it totally depends on situation, the level of the students, mood and so on. When I am in a jolly mood I share many practical experience and my personal events to make the class more cheerful. Sometimes, I arrange group discussion, speaking test, quizzing part and so many things. I also keep a questioner part when all the students can make any type of question which may be related to the text or outside of their syllabus.

Purposes of Education

 Purposes of Education:

As education is a long process and so its purposes are so many that we cannot explain it in a single idea. However, I feel the following basic aims would be at its core:

  • To give all learners the basic skills to access and drive their own education.
  • To develop the softer, non-subject life skills needed to succeed.
  • To impart powerful subject knowledge (and by this we mean the facts, concepts and procedural knowledge needed to continue to take that subject further and progress in it)
  • To enlighten the individuals.
  • To enlarge his outlook.
  • To differentiate between right and wrong.
  • To prepare children for citizenship
  • To cultivate a skilled workforce
  • To teach cultural literacy
  • To help students become critical thinkers
  • To help students compete in a global marketplace
  • To know thyself
  • To prepare for the future life
  • To make plan and carry out investigations
  • To obtain, evaluate, and communicate information

Besides them, education always gives us a shared understanding of what is valued, where our efforts should be focused, and whether we are making progress or not. Thus an individual, receiving education, can enlighten his/her personal, family, social and national life.

What is Knowledge

What is Knowledge?

According to the definition of Wikipedia, Knowledge is a familiarity, awareness, or understanding of someone or something, such as facts, information, descriptions or skills, which is acquired through experience or education by perceiving or learning. Similarly, knowledge indicates the facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.    We have found that Chinese philosophy has emphasized the complementary nature of the intuitive and the rational and has represented them by the archetypal pair yin and yang. Similarly, debates about the meaning of knowledge have continued for thousands of years, and seem likely to continue for some time to come.

The Bangabandhu Satellite

The Bangabandhu Satellite-1 is the greatest achievement of Bangladesh Government and it is the first Bangladeshi geostationary communications and Broadcasting Satellite in her history.

The Bangabandhu-1 satellite was initially planned to be launched on an Ariane 5 rocket on 16 December 2017, to celebrate Victory Day of Bangladesh. It was manufactured by Thales Alenia Space and launched on 11 May 2018 from Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, Florida, USA and utilizes ground control stations built by Thales Alenia Space with its partner Spectra Primary Ground Station in Gazipur, Dhaka and Secondary Ground Station at Betbunia, Rangamati. The project is being implemented by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) working hand-in-hand with US based Space Partnership International, LLC. It was the first payload launched by a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket of Space X.

Bangladesh Government formed a Government owned Bangladesh Communication Satellite Company Limited, BCSCL with the aim to operate the Bangabandhu Satellite-1.

The satellite is named after the father of the nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It is designed and manufactured by Thales Alenia Space and its launch provider is Space X. The total cost of the satellite was projected to be 248 million US dollars in 2015 (Tk 19.51 billion), financed via a $188.7 million loan from  HSBC Holding. The satellite will expand Ku-band coverage over all of Bangladesh and its nearby waters including the Bay of Bengalal, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, East Indian states (West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachhal Pradeah) and Indonesia.

After launching the satellite, Bangladesh began to receive test signal from it on May 12, 2018. A ground station has been built in Bangladesh to control the satellite at Gazipur. A backup ground station was also built at Betbunia, Rangamati.

Types of validity

Content validity. A test is said to have content validity if the items or tasks of which it is made up constitute a representative sample of items or tasks for the area of knowledge or ability to be tested (often related to a syllabus or a course).

Construct validity. A test is said to have construct validity if the scores that a candidate gets on this relate in the same way to another test or form of assessment for the same aspect of knowledge.

Empirical validity. A measure of the validity of a test arrived at by comparing the test with one or more criterion measures.

Face validity. The extent to which a test appeals to candidates or to those choosing it on behalf of the candidates because it is considered to be an acceptable measure of the ability they wish to measure. It is sometimes referred to as ‘test appeal’.

Types of Testing in ELT

Achievement testing. It is used to determine whether or not students have mastered the course content and how they should proceed. The content of achievement tests, which are commonly given at the end of the course, is generally based on the course syllabus or the course textbook.

Proficiency testing. It is used to measure learners’ general linguistic knowledge, abilities or skills without reference to any specific course.

Some proficiency tests are intended to show whether students or people outside the formal educational system have reached a given level of general language ability.

Others are designed to show whether candidates have sufficient ability to be able to use a language in some specific area such as medicine, tourism etc. Such tests are often called Specific Purposes tests.

Diagnostic testing which seeks to identify those areas in which a student needs further help. These tests can be fairly general, and show, for example, whether a student needs particular help with one of the four language skills; or they can be more specific, seeking to identify weaknesses in a student’s use of grammar.

Progress testing: It is used at various stages throughout a language course to determine learners’ progress up to that point and to see what they have learnt.

Psychometric testing which is aimed at measuring  psychological traits such as personality, intelligence, aptitude, ability, knowledge, skills which makes specific assumptions about the nature of the ability tested (e.g. that it is unidimensional and normally distributed). It includes a lot of discrete point items.

Competence testing which is used to measure candidates’ acquired capability to understand and produce a certain level of foreign language, defined by phonological, lexical grammatical, sociolinguistic and discourse constituents. In order to make test-takers’ competence measurable and visible, testers turn of necessity to their actual performance which may indicate their competence.

Performance testing which includes direct, systematic observation of an actual student performance or examples of student performances and rating of that performance according to pre-established performance criteria. Students are assessed on the result as well as the process engaged in a complex task or creation of a product. / A performance test measures performance on tasks requiring the application of learning in an actual or simulated setting. Either the test stimulus, the desired response, or both are intended to lend a high degree of realism to the test situation.

Integrative tests which include activities that assess skills and knowledge in an integrated manner (e.g., reading and writing, listening and speaking). Less attention is paid to specific lexicogrammatical points.

Discrete point tests, which contain items that ideally reveal the candidate’s ability to handle one level of language and one element of receptive or productive skills.

Different Forms of Assessment in Classroom

Continuous assessment refers to the activities required by students during the conduct of a course. It takes place within the normal teaching period and contributes to the final assessment.

Formative assessment refers to observations which allow one to determine the degree to which students know or are able to perform a given task. It involves all those activities (assigned by teachers and performed by students) which provide information used as feedback so that teaching may meet students’ needs. It can also include teacher assessment, feedback and feed-forward.

Summative assessment is usually carried out at the conclusion of a unit or units of instruction, activity or plan, in order to assess acquired knowledge and skills at that particular point in time. It usually serves the purpose of giving a grade or making a judgment about the students’ achievements in the course.

Self-assessment occurs when an appraisal instrument is self-administered for the specific purpose of providing performance feedback, diagnosis and prescription recommendations rather than a pass/fail decision. Students engage in a systematic review of their progress and achievement, usually for the purpose of improvement. It may involve comparison with an exemplar, success criteria, or other criteria. It may also involve critiquing one’s own work or a description of the achievement obtained.

Peer assessment occurs when students judge one another’s work on the basis of reference criteria. This can occur using a range of strategies. The peer assessment process needs to be taught and students need to be supported by opportunities to practice it regularly in a supportive and safe (classroom) environment.

Morphology: Morphology is the Analysis of word structure.

The system of categories and rules involved in word formation and interpretation makes up a language’s morphology.

Like syllables and sentences, words have an internal structure consisting of smaller units organized with respect to each other in a particular way.

The most important component of word structure is the morpheme, the smallest unit of language that carries information about meaning or function.  The word builder, for example, consists of two morphemes: ‘build’ and ‘er’.

Free and bound morphemes

A free morpheme is a word that can stand by itself and give a meaning. A morpheme that must be attached to another element is said to be a bound morpheme.
