Steven Paul Jobs (24 February 1955 – 5 October 2011), most popularly known as Steve Jobs was the co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. He was the pioneer of the personal computer revolution. He was famous for his career in the electronic field of computers and consumers. This became possible through the marketing of Apple computers.

In 1985, Jobs left Apple after losing a power battle with the board of directors. He then founded NeXT, a computer platform development company specializing in the higher education and business market. On the other hand, Apple failed to bring up any new operating system during Job’s absence. Jobs returned to Apple as an adviser, and took control of the company as an interim CEO. By 1998, Jobs brought back Apple to profitability from the verge of bankruptcy. He supervised the development of iMac, iTunes, iPod, iPhone and iPad. These devices are so simple and user friendly that even a child can operate them.

He supervised the company’s Apple Stores, iTunes Store and the App Store too. The success of these products and services brought about steady financial returns for several years and pushed Apple to become the world’s most valuable publicly traded company in 2011. This triumph is regarded as the greatest turnarounds in the business history. Steve Jobs has been highly acclaimed as a visionary leader. Jobs has changed people’s perspective computer, and how they use it, consume personal media, and how they communicate with each other. Hence i-Books, i-Phones, i-Pods and i-Pads have become extremely popular. Jobs saw and felt the need of Wi-Fi in laptops. It is who made Wi-Fi a standard feature of every laptop and of many other devices worldwide. So Jobs’ dream to be anywhere anytime became a reality.  Read the following passage and answer the questions 1, 2 and 3

Communication of ideas is at the centre of civilization. It needs written records. Most of our records in the modern age are on paper. Though writing was invented very early, paper is a more modern invention.

For long in history, people transferred ideas through speaking and listening. Then there came the art of writing. But to record thoughts in writing was difficult. Writing material was not available. People used surface of stone, metal, wood, bark, leaves, etc. for writing. Those things were not easy to carry. Then for ages, people looked for easy writing materials. Finally, Paper was invented in China in 105 AD. Before paper age, knowledge was very restricted. Can you think of that time? There were very few books in the world. Maybe, they were written on stone or on heavy wood plunks or on metal sheets. Suppose, one page was a heavy stone block. So think of a hundred page book! In our age, you can carry the entire world of knowledge in digital form in your laptop bag. You can even carry a huge volume of paper encyclopedia. The pioneer of Bangladeshi modern art Zainul Abedin is widely acclaimed for his Bengal ‘Famine Sketches’. Through a series of sketches, Zainul not only documented the harsh famine of 1940 but also showed its sinister face through the skeletal figures of the people destined to die of starvation in a man-made plight. He depicted these extremely shocking pictures with human compassion. He made his own ink by burning charcoal and using cheap ordinary packing paper for sketching. He produced a series of brush and ink

drawings, which later became iconic images of human sufferings. Zainul developed a knack for drawing and painting when he was a high school student. After completing high school, he got admission to the Government School of Art, Calcutta (now Kolkata). He graduated with the first position in first class in 1938. He was appointed teacher of the Art School while he was still a student there. He also attended the Slade School of Arts, London in 1951-52. Zainul Abedin is considered the founding father of Bangladeshi art. He was an artist of outstanding talent and earned international reputation. For his artistic and visionary qualities, he is referred to as Shilpacharya meaning ‘great teacher of art’ in
Bangladesh. He was the first Principal of the first art school in Dhaka in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). He organized the Nabanna (harvest) exhibition in 1969. In the exhibition, a 65-foot long scroll portraying the rural East Pakistan in phases from abundance to poverty. This intensified the already heightened non-cooperation movement against the Pakistan regime. The exhibition was symbolic of the artists’ protest and a milestone in demanding cultural and political freedom. Zainul’s English For Today
105 dynamic style of work is evident in a 30 foot long scroll painting called Manpura, which was done to commemorate the death of hundreds and thousands of people in the devastating cyclone of 1970.
He designed the pages of Constitution of Bangladesh. He founded the Folk Art Museum at Sonargoan, and also Zainul Abedin Shangrahasala, a gallery of his own works in Mymensing in 1975.
The river Brahmaputra plays a predominant role in his paintings and a source of inspiration all through his career. Much of his childhood was spent near the scenic beauty of the river Brahmaputra. Thomas Alva Edison was born February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio (pronounced MY-lan). In 1854, when he was seven, the family moved to Michigan, where Edison spent the rest of his childhood.
“Al,” as he was called as a boy, went to school only a short time. He did so poorly that his mother, a former teacher, taught her son at home. Al learned to love reading, a habit he kept for the rest of his life. He also liked to make experiments in the basement.
Al not only played hard, but also worked hard. At the age of 12 he sold fruit, snacks and newspapers on a train as a “news butcher.” (Trains were the newest way to travel, cutting through the American wilderness.) He even printed his own newspaper, the Grand Trunk Herald, on a moving train.
At 15, Al roamed the country as a “tramp telegrapher.” Using a kind of alphabet called Morse Code, he sent and received messages over the telegraph. Even though he was already losing his hearing, he could still hear the clicks of the telegraph. In the next seven years he moved over a dozen times, often working all night, taking messages for trains and even for the Union Army during the Civil War. In his spare time, he took things apart to see how they worked. Finally, he decided to invent things himself.
After the failure of his first invention, the electric vote recorder, Edison moved to New York City. There he improved the way the stock ticker worked. This was his big break. By 1870 his company was manufacturing his stock ticker in Newark, New Jersey. He also improved the telegraph, making it send up to four messages at once.
During this time he married his first wife, Mary Stilwell, on Christmas Day, 1871. They had three children — Marion, Thomas, Jr., and William. Wanting a quieter spot to do more inventing, Edison moved from Newark to Menlo Park, New Jersey, in 1876. There he built his most famous laboratory.

Subject: How I observed my last birthday ceremony

Dear Sathi,

As you know, I celebrated my birthday on 10th November in your absence. It was truly a memorable occasion for me. The birthday party was arranged at our residence at 6pm. The central hall was beautifully decorated. New curtains, flower-pots and the furniture looked lovely. I bought all necessary things from the market. We invited all our close friends and relatives. I cut the cake after blowing the candles. Everyone sang the birthday song. Tasty dishes, including hot tea and coffee were served. Everyone enjoyed the party. The guests presented me wonderful gifts. My father gifted me a Titan wrist watch. It is a beautiful and very useful gift for me. I enjoyed the party a lot. Oh! How I missed you on that day! But you had your compulsions. Anyway, please convey my regards to your parents.

Yours sincerely

The Uses of Computer

Science has given birth to many wonders and computer is one of them. Computer was not invented overnight. It took a long time and hard labour to invent computer.

Pascal first invented the theory of “Digital Calculating System” in 1642. Though his attempts were not crowned with success, he initiated the research which paved the way to the invention of computer. Finally Mr Haward Akin, an American scientist, invented such a machine in 1937 that could do difficult sums. After seven years, in 1944 electric computer was used in Harvard University. After that many other computers were invented such as EDSAC in 1945 and ENTACE in 1946.

There are five major components in a computer such as the input unit, the output unit, the memory unit, the control unit and the arithmetic unit. A computer performs three functions (i) it receives data (ii) it processes data by various computations and (iii) it emits data. Computer is really of great use to us. It renders great service to mankind. It is like Aladdin’s lamp or magic wand. It has lessened our workloads and made our life easy and comfortable. It is used in all spheres of human life like—education, medical science, agriculture, commerce, printing and electronic media, mills and factories etc.

Computer is a source of income for many. Many developed and advanced countries export software and hardware and earn a lot foreign currency. There are no unmixed blessings on earth. Everything has its dark sides too. Computer has its own merits and demerits. It causes weakness of the eyesight of the operators. It also causes other physical complexities.

In Bangladesh, many government and non-government offices, educational institutions are also using computers. A course on computer has been introduced at secondary and higher secondary levels. The day is not far to come when computers will be used in every sphere of life in our country. In fact computers have become the driving force of the modern civilization.

A Composition on My Childhood Memories

My Childhood Memories

I often reminisce about the days of my childhood. Whenever I am sick of the present, I seek relief in the past and recall the happenings of the early years of my life. Though everything is not fresh in my memory, still I can remember some interesting events of my childhood days.

I was born in a small village in the district of Chandpur. My father was a school teacher. We had a small house where I lived happily in the midst of my parents, brothers and sister. My mother was very affectionate to us. My father was a saintly man. My grandfather died long before my birth. But my grandmother was very fond of me. Her lap was a cosy place for me. She used to tell tales and sing lullabies to put me to sleep.

My playground was the bank of the mighty Padma. In all seasons the Padma had a great attraction for me. Whenever I was not at home, anybody could find me on its bank. Other children also accompanied me on the riverbank. We used to row in the river, jump into it and swim in it. The village Maktab was another interesting place. An old Maulavi Sahib taught us there. A large number of boys and girls used to attend it. We would learn our lessons with a great noise, but the Maulavi Sahib never punished us. He was in fact a good man at heart.

Another interesting memory is the village hat. The hat used to sit twice a week near the river. My father used to go there to buy things. The hat was a noisy place. I usually went there with some other children. We used to take with us our little savings and buy sweets. After spending some time we would get back home.

But my happy days did not last long. My father got an appointment in a town school. He moved to the town immediately with all the members of our family. I was admitted into my father’s school. I felt that my schoolmates did not like me much. They had no brotherly feelings for one another as I saw it in the village. In the town people seemed to work and move like machines.

I was sorry to live in the town, but gradually I adjusted myself to the town life. But still I cherish the sweet memories of my happy childhood days spent in the charming environment of my village.
